Well, I've been kind of quiet because I really try not to rant, and I haven't trusted myself not to.
I don't dig smears. I don't like personal attacks. And I have seen very little except hysterical smears and personal attacks on Governor Sarah Palin, especially since Saturday.
My initial impression is that I like the woman, and we'll see she if she shows herself worthy of McCain's faith in her over the next 60-odd days until the election.
But this sort of sewer politics turned my stomach when Republicans afflicted with Clinton Derangement Syndrome engaged in it, and it turns my stomach no less when Democrats afflicted with Palin Derangement Syndrome engage in it.
By all means, have at her with tough, probing questions about Governor Palin's policies, Governor Palin's ideas, Governor Palin's qualifications to be Vice President. But please leave the rest of her family out of it, especially her minor children, even Bristol.
More soon, after her speech. For what it's worth, I believe the expectations could not be lower for her speech, so I think she'll benefit from that and nail it. We'll see.

Clearly selecting her as VP was a shrewd short term tactical move, because of the old "how do you hit a girl w/out looking like a d--k?" scenario. I think Biden given his combative nature is going to have a tough time. But I think it's hypocrisy. I think yours and the Republican establishments belly aching about unfair attacks seems a little ridiculous in light of the haranging attack dog nature of her speech last night.

The whole librarian - book banning thing is a personal hot button issue for me. Also, four more years of someone who is tied into the fossil fuel establishment also is a bit of an issue for me.
Apparently I'm not the only one seeing some hypocrisy here. Check out the attached John Stewart clip, pretty funny and pretty much sums up all the Republican whining. These guys play hard ball all the time, then when it's thrown back at them they beef. Like a schoolyard bully. I have the same issues with Palin as you do, Liam, especially the ham-handed attempt at library censorship.
If Palin were at the top of the ticket, it's likely I wouldn't vote for her. But she's not -- McCain is at the top of the ticket, and he's much more moderate than Palin is, on social conservative issues especially.
She's the red meat pit bull, the true-blue conservative to McCain's moderate.
My issue is, Obama is the inexperienced ultra-liberal, and he's at the top of the ticket. If he were the up-and-comer in the VP slot for the Dems serving up the red meat for them, I'd be okay with that. But on judgement and the quality of his ideas, he's as fit for the office as Sarah Palin is, no more, no less.
So it comes down to a no-brainer for me: a tough, moderate veteran in McCain vs. an ultra-liberal with poor ideas and little to no relevant experience.
McCain or Obama will be the folks making policy, not Palin or Biden, after all.
Lastly, I have no issue with a critical, fair-minded look at her record, none at all -- it's the allegations that she was Trig's grandmother, not his mother, that set me off. Something Daily KOS, Huffington Post, and Andrew Sullivan still haven't let go of, and that stuff is just beyond the pale to me.
